The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is off key again...

I just saw the list for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and it includes Bon Jovi and Alice Cooper, two artists deserving of induction.  (Alice is long overdue, if you ask me.)  However, the ballot omits (for the eleventh straight year) KISS.  Also left of the ballot are Deep Purple, Ted Nugent and Rush.   All four of these artists played very important roles in shaping and influencing rock artists for decades to come.  But yet, included on the ballot for possible induction in 2011: Donna Summer, Tom Waits, Donovan and J. Giles Band.  Can anyone make an arguement those four artists are more deserving than the four left of the ballot this year?  Of course not.  They aren't, plain and simple.  The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame has continually shunned these artists for reasons unknown.  Other flubs from the R&RHOF are not inducting Aerosmith on their first year of eligibility and making Black Sabbath wait multiple years before finally voting them in.  I could also question the induction of such artists as ABBA and Grandmaster Flash, neither of which is rock and roll.  (I understand a disco hall of fame would have roughly five members and honestly, is anyone going to invest in building a Rap Music Hall of Fame and Museum?  Exactly. So let them in, it gives people like me something to write about and all of you something to debate.)    The truth is, KISS, Teddy, Rush and Deep Purple all deserve to be in the Hall.  Until they are included, the R&RHOF is like a performance of "Freebird" without the lighters.

It's Too Early For Christmas

You know, I like Christmas as much as any other Gentile. But, stores displaying Christmas decorations, wrapping paper, clothing and tree accesories in September is jumping the gun a bit, don't you think?  Just this past week I saw these types of items at JoAnn Fabrics and Walmart.  Santa Claus should not be displayed at any retail outlet until after Jason Vorhees and Jigsaw have been packed away until next year.  I shouldn't see reindeer next to hairy spiders or angels next to vampires.  Christmas decorations should not be visible until my breath is visible.  Serioulsy, do any of you want to see Christmas decorations before November first?  I don't. It's assanine.  Who in the world buys snowman ornaments in September?  Have any of you ever purchased elf toes socks before Halloween has come and gone?  I know retail outlets in America have run amock with merchandising and commercialism, but there has to be a line drawn somewhere.  Having Rudolph one aisle over from Leatherface is crossing the line.  So please, Taregt, Walmart, JoAnn Fabrics, Michael's and all the rest of you, but the Christmas stuff away until November.  It's too early for Dasher and Dancer.

The Fall of American Idol

It is time for American Idol to call it quits.  No more Simon.  Ellen is gone.  Paula is gone.  And now, Steven Tyler and J-Lo are judges.  Don't get me wrong, Steven Tyler is one of rock n' roll's greatest icons.  He is one of, if not the most, electric and charismatic front men in all of music.  However, an American Idol judge he is not.  Tyler shold be above this kind of nonsense.  He does not need the money or the publicity.  J-Lo on the other hand doesn't need the money, but she sure needs the publicity.  Mrs. Mark Anthony hasn't made a good movie since U-Turn and needs to be in the spotlight again.  She won't be as entertaining as Paula, (J-Lo doesn't fit the flakiness of Ms. Abdul) and very few people are as genuine as Ellen.  These choices are as confusing as they are stupid.  American Idol without Simon will not be fun or entertaining in any way whatsoever.  It's time for FOX to end this once powerhouse show and move on to something else.  Let Steven Tyler stick to gyrating on stage to "Love in an Elevator" and "Sweet Emotion" and J-Lo continue to make awful movies.  Idol has run its course.
